The objective of this research is to analyze the Dominican Republic as a tourist destination and its potential as a competitor for Cuba, taking into account that due to its performance in terms of tourism, it has become the first Caribbean destination for most of the main sending markets to Cuba. To this end, the main geographical, economic and social characteristics of the Dominican Republic are related. The fundamental elements that typify the country as a tourism receiver are exposed; Describing its main regions and tourist modalities, its fundamental source markets, the hotel infrastructure, as well as the model of tourist development that should define its strategies. The potentialities of the Dominican Republic with respect to Cuba are determined by establishing a comparison between the two, based on tourist arrivals, the behavior of seasonality, international airlines, the main tour operators and the hotel offer, emphasizing the representation of Foreign investment. The results obtained from this comparison are corroborated with the criteria referred to when applying the interview to the experts. This work provides a compendium of updated information that can be used by specialists and students in the sector, to give continuity to other competition studies, at the same time that it contributes elements that contribute to the taking of strategic in the improvement of Cuban tourism strategies.
